「PORTRAIT STUDIES」について

 

かつてアニメーション制作で使用され、現在ではデジタル化によって失われつつある「セル画」という技法を用いて、実在する多様な市民をモデルに描くプロジェクトです。

 

本来、セル画とはメディア（本物）を作り出す物理的な素材であるといえますが、セル画そのものを物理的なアート作品（本物）と捉え、現代のツールであるweb やSNS といったメディアを経由させ伝達することによって、それぞれの持つ意味を変容させることができるといえます。

つまり、我々は何をもって「存在」を認識するのかということへの問いかけとして、セル画を取り扱うことに特徴があります。また、ポップカルチャーに由来する親しみやすい表現であることは、アートの専門家や愛好家に限らない幅広い層に興味関心を抱いてもらえるきっかけになると考えます。

 

そして、タイトルにあえて「STUDIES」とつけているのは、完成を目的としない習作群であることに加え、アーティストと市民の関わりによって作品が生まれるアートプロジェクトの実践的研究でもあるということが理由です。

 

作品を通じて「描くこと/ そこに人がいること」、デジタルイメージ全盛の今日における「物質」としての表現、そして「人という存在」とは何かという根源的な問いを鑑賞者と共有することを目指しています。

 

 

 

 

About "PORTRAIT STUDIES"

 

This project involves creating portraits of diverse real-life citizens using the traditional animation technique of cel painting—a method once

commonly used in animation production but now fading due to digitalization.

 

Originally, cels served as the physical materials used to produce the media (the "authentic" work). In this project, however, cels themselves are reinterpreted as physical artworks (the "authentic" object). By transmitting these works through contemporary media platforms such as the web and social networking services (SNS), the project seeks to transform and challenge the meanings associated with both the original materials and modern media.

Media (web/SNS, etc.) → Cel (authentic)

 

 

In other words, the project uses cels as a way to pose the question: How do we recognize “existence” ? One of the defining features of this work is its engagement with this ontological inquiry. Additionally, since the cel aesthetic originates from popculture, it carries a familiarity that invites interest not only from art professionals and enthusiasts but also from a broader, general audience.

 

The word “STUDIES” is intentionally included in the title to indicate that these works are not intended as finished products, but rather as studies— a series of exploratory pieces. It also reflects the project’ s nature as a practical investigation into how artworks emerge through the interaction between artists and citizens.

 

Through these works, the project aims to share with viewers the experience of “drawing / the presence of a person,” to reconsider material expression in our digital age, and to explore fundamental questions about what it means to be human.
